Protective packaging for fragile e-commerce without plastic
Fragile goods break for three reasons in transit. What paper packaging can be engineered to stop, and where it cannot replace plastic.
Why fragile goods arrive broken, and it is rarely one big drop
Three things break parcels, and they are not the same problem. The first is movement. An item that can travel inside its box does so for the whole journey: hundreds of small knocks against the same corner of the carton, on a conveyor, in a cage, in the back of a van. Chipped glaze, scuffed lacquer and loosened joints are movement damage, not impact damage.
The second is the drop. Parcels get thrown, and they almost never land flat. A corner or an edge takes the whole energy of the fall through a few square centimetres, which is why a corner-first drop from bench height does more harm than a flat drop from higher up. The third is compression: the parcel at the bottom of a stacked cage carries everything above it for hours.
Each failure wants a different answer. Movement wants the space filled. Impact wants a cushion where the parcel actually gets hit. Compression wants a box that keeps its shape, and contents that are not asked to carry the stack. A pack that solves only one of the three keeps producing damages, whatever it is made of.
Cushioning and void fill are two different jobs
Void fill occupies empty space so the contents cannot move. Cushioning absorbs energy by deforming where the blow lands. In a box they look similar, and they are not interchangeable. Trouble starts when one material has to do both jobs across a catalogue that needs each of them in different places.
Paper does both, but with different products. Swiftpack is crinkle-cut kraft void fill: it occupies the irregular space around a hand-picked item. SwiftWrap is expanding honeycomb kraft: drawn off its dispenser it opens into cells, and wrapped around a product it cushions the surface and holds the item still in the same motion. Where paper really does replace bubble wrap
For most of an e-commerce catalogue — ceramics, glassware, bottles, small castings, instruments, anything with vulnerable corners — paper does the job plastic bubble was doing. The mechanism is different. Bubble protects with sealed air that squashes and pushes back. Honeycomb kraft protects with structure: its cells crush progressively and take the energy out of the impact as they collapse.
The practical gain is that paper grips the product instead of sliding around it, so it fills the void and cushions in one motion. Fewer materials on the bench, fewer decisions per parcel, and a pack a new packer repeats correctly on their second day.
Where paper does not replace plastic, and you should say so
Paper is not a moisture barrier. If a parcel will sit in an unheated van in winter, wait outside on a doorstep, or carry a cold item into a warm depot, the water has to be dealt with by a barrier layer or by a different material. Wet paper stops cushioning.
Sealed air still has more travel in it than a paper cell, so for a single very hard flat impact on a heavy, dense item — the one that comes off the tail lift — plastic can still win. And if your specification calls for something paper does not provide, such as a static-dissipative material for bare electronics, that is a separate specification confirmed per product, not a substitution.
Test the surface as well. Anything shipped as bare high-gloss lacquer or a mirror finish should be sampled against the actual paper before a line switches over. That check costs one carton and an afternoon, and it is a great deal cheaper than learning about it from a customer's photograph.
The box is half the protection
The most common cause of damage in a hand-pick operation is not the cushioning material. It is the box. An item packed into a carton far bigger than itself has room to travel, and no amount of fill poured in afterwards is as good as a box that never created the space.
Oversizing costs twice over. You buy more fill to occupy a void you invented, and carriers price a parcel on both its weight and the room it takes up — the exact volumetric method varies by carrier and by contract, so read your own. Cutting a box range down to sizes that actually match the catalogue removes material, shipping cost and damage together.
What a damaged parcel really costs, before you change anything
A broken item is never one cost. It is the goods, the second pick and pack, the second carriage, the time in customer service and often the refund as well, plus a customer whose replacement arrives a week late. Most operations know this and still do not have the number per SKU.
Get it before you change materials. Log damages by SKU for a month. Take the item that appears most often, pack a run of it the new way, keep the existing pack running alongside it, and count claims on both. Then decide with a figure, from your own goods and your own carrier.
One parcel, one material stream
A parcel made of board, paper protection and paper tape leaves the customer one thing to do. A mixed parcel has to be taken apart first: bubble out of the carton, plastic tape off the flaps, three materials into three places, in the hope that somebody bothers.

Be careful how you word the claim printed on the box. The material is paper and it is recyclable; what a specific collection accepts is decided by the local authority and differs from one to the next. - Does paper protect fragile items as well as bubble wrap?
- For most goods, yes, but by a different mechanism. Bubble protects with sealed air; honeycomb kraft protects with structure, its cells crushing to absorb the impact while the wrap holds the item still inside the box. Sealed air still has more travel for one very hard flat blow on something heavy. Test it on the SKU that breaks most often, not on the whole catalogue.
