Cutting film consumption across a 3PL operation
Film use in a 3PL hides behind rolls a month. How to find it, measure it per pallet, and cut it without losing containment.
Where does the film actually go in a 3PL?
A contract logistics site wraps for a dozen clients at once — chilled food on one lane, hardware on another, promotional repacks in the corner. Film arrives as a single consumable line on the ledger, measured in rolls a month. That figure tells you what you bought. It tells you nothing about what any one pallet consumed, or which contract consumed it.
The consumption sits in three places, and they behave differently. The wrapping machines, where a settings change made months ago is still running. The hand-wrap stations, where odd, over-height and rebuilt pallets are finished by an operator with a roll on a stick. And goods-in, where pallets that arrived badly wrapped are cut open and wrapped again, on your film and your time.
Weigh the pallet before you renegotiate the roll price
Rolls a month moves with volume, client mix, roll length and how many of the stated metres actually arrived. Grams per pallet does not. Cut the film off three finished pallets on each lane — a routine one, a heavy one and an awkward one — weigh it, and time the wrap with a stopwatch. Then repeat the exercise on a different shift.
You now have a real baseline, per contract and per station, in grams and in minutes. Multiply by the pallets each contract shipped last month and the film budget stops being one number and becomes a list of them, sorted by what they cost.
Same pallet, same machine: how much film the job really needs
Toreto ran a wrap test in its own plant in August 2026: one pallet, one machine, the same power stretch and tension settings throughout, film cut off and weighed after every run. Solid 23µ film held 9.9 kg/sq in on 200 g, at roughly €0.48 a pallet. At 20µ, the same 9.9 on 174 g. At 17µ, still 9.9, on 140 g.
Supersonic and Aerosonic at 16µ held 10 kg/sq in on 66 g, about €0.32 a pallet. Same load, same wrapper, a third of the material and slightly more holding — because the reinforced films ran roughly 50% fewer revolutions to get there. Fewer revolutions is also throughput: the same machine turns out about twice as many pallets a shift. These are Toreto's own measurements, and the cash figures move with film price and pallet size.
Why nano film rarely survives a mixed-client operation
In the same test, 12µ nano film wrapped the pallet on 91 g for about €0.32 — the lightest single pass on the sheet, and the weakest: 7.6 kg/sq in. Nano depends on a machine in good order and settings that are exactly right. When something is off it does not degrade gracefully. It fails.
A 3PL is precisely the environment where something is usually off: machines of different ages across sites, a roll changed mid-shift, a load nothing was set up for. So the floor double-wraps to be safe. Two passes lift holding to 11.9 kg/sq in, but the pallet now carries 182 g at about €0.64 and the wrapper's output halves — 50% slower and 50% more expensive than Supersonic at the same holding.
One film across chilled, ambient and export clients
Mixed contracts usually mean mixed film. Ambient goods go under solid wrap; anything chilled, hot-filled or still respiring has to breathe, or the load sweats inside the plastic and arrives rusted, softened or refused. On most sites that means a second film with its own machine settings, and breathable film on the market typically costs up to 100% more in use.
Supersonic and Aerosonic are made from the same materials and perform the same — one solid and reinforced, one macroperforated and breathable. They run at the same cost per pallet on unchanged machine settings, so a lane can switch from ambient to chilled work without a setting change, a retrain or a second price. For a 3PL that re-plans its floor every quarter, that is the whole point.
The hand-wrap stations are where the consumption hides
Machine lanes get looked at. Hand-wrap does not, and it is where the awkward pallets end up. Toreto's second measured test ran in the field in the United Kingdom in August 2026, on exactly that kind of pallet: a hard load with large gaps and very sharp corners, machine-wrapped at the factory with several film failures. The film was cut off and weighed — 181 g, £0.60 of film, two minutes, £0.40 of labour: £1.00.
Rewrapped by hand with the Hyper Wrap System, the same pallet took 151 g, £0.54 of film, one minute and £0.20 of labour: £0.74, 26% less, in half the time. Be precise about where the saving is. Fifty per cent fewer metres went onto the load, because the film is stronger and wider; the weight only fell from 181 g to 151 g. Labour on both lines is the same operative at £0.20 a minute.
The Hyper Wrap System is not a roll you can order on its own — the Hypersonic Efficiency Film and its dispenser frame are sold together, because neither figure holds without the other. It is offered as the alternative to buying a wrapping machine for a station that has no volume to justify one. Half the wrap time is either twice the pallets a shift, or fewer people tied to the job.
How to change film without disrupting a live contract
Change one lane, not the site. Pick the contract with the highest pallet count and the simplest load, wrap a day's output on the new film at the settings the supplier specifies, then cut and weigh the film off the same three reference pallets you baselined. If grams per pallet and holding both move the right way, you have evidence rather than a claim.
Then multiply it out. At 20,000 pallets a month, taking ten cents off each one is €24,000 a year on wrap alone — before the shift capacity the extra revolutions were eating.
